Keep Animals Out Of A Fountain

Water fountains are tranquil additions to a garden.

Keeping animals out of a fountain is an ongoing process. Dogs and cats enjoy getting a drink from running water and birds use a fountain to bathe in. This can dirty the water and hair and dirt can clog the pump. In order to keep animals from the fountain you need to install deterrents. Switch to a new deterrent if one becomes ineffective. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Erect a fence around the fountain that is high and tight enough to keep animals out. Choose fencing that is appropriate for the type of animal you are deterring, such as rabbit wire for small animals.

2. Install a motion sensor light with the light and sensor aimed at the fountain.

3. Leave predator decoys near the fountain. Decoy snakes will scare away many animals. Move the decoy around periodically so the animals don't become acclimated to it.

4. Spray repellents around the fountain. The type of repellent varies, depending on the animal. For example, predator urine keeps away many small or prey animals. Reapply deterrents frequently, especially after it rains.

5. Install alarms, which can be attached to animal sprays which are activated when the alarm goes off. These are most effective at dark.

6. Throw a net over the fountain when it's not in use or you will be away for extended periods of time.
