Control Mosquitoes In Yards With Drainage Pipes

Drain pipes can become breeding grounds for mosquitos.

The pipe system that drains rainwater from your roof might have water sitting in it, creating a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Careful attention is required to help avoid the disease-spreading, pests from laying eggs in the standing water inside your pipes. It doesn't take a lot of money to keep your yard mosquito-free. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Ensure that your drainage pipe is properly installed. Hire a professional to evaluate it, if you aren't sure. A drainage pipe that is improperly installed holds more water, making it a more likely breeding ground for mosquitoes.

2. Cut a piece of pantyhose material large enough to stretch over the opening at the bottom of your pipe. Secure in place with a rubber band. This will keep female adult mosquitoes from entering to lay their eggs in water in the pipe.

3. Hang a mosquito dunk, made from bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis, in the corrugated pipe underground that your drainage pipes drain into. These are doughnut-shaped. Tie a string around one and drop it into the pipe, then stake the other end of the string so that it won't get washed away with the water. The bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis is a naturally occurring bacteria that inhibits mosquitoes and is nontoxic.
