Law enforcement officers in eastern North Carolina are trained at the Coastal Plain Law Enforcement Academy, founded in 1967. The academy is located at Wilson Community College in Wilson, N.C., and offers both a basic law enforcement training course for new recruits and in-service training for veteran law enforcement officers.
Requirements for Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy
The 654-hour Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy takes place over 17 weeks and prepares recruits for the comprehensive North Carolina certification examination. Candidates for the BLET course must be North Carolina residents at least 20 years old, demonstrate reading proficiency, be physically fit, and be sponsored by a local police department.
Basic Law Enforcement Training
Students at the BLET academy are trained in basic police procedure and firearms, and for the physical demands of being a police officer. According to the academy, 99 percent of graduates pass the state certification exam, and 100 percent of graduates are employed after graduation.
In-Service Training
For experienced officers, the training academy offers continuing education certificates in criminal investigation, law enforcement management, law enforcement tactical specialist and traffic enforcement specialist. In addition, local law enforcement agencies can schedule training in specific topics, such as case management or narcotics, to provide education to their officers.
