Donkey Mosquito Repellent

Mosquito repellents can protect your donkey from the insect's bites.

Mosquito bites on donkeys can lead to irritation and itching, as well as cause long-term health problems. Learn the facts about donkey mosquito repellent so you can provide your animals with adequate protection from this pesky insect. Does this Spark an idea?

Significance

Whether your donkey simply is a pet or it works for a living protecting livestock, such as sheep or goats, mosquito repellent is an essential tool in your donkey supply kit. Not only can mosquitoes irritate your donkey's skin, but their bites also can lead to West Nile Virus, a potentially serious mosquito-borne disease to which donkeys are particularly susceptible, according to the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service.

Features

Commercially prepared mosquito repellents for donkeys typically consist of sprays or wipe-on solutions. If you choose a commercially prepared mosquito repellent, stick with one formulated specifically for donkeys or use one made for horses, according to Janet Vorwald Dohner, author of "Livestock Guardians."

Considerations

If you'd rather use a natural mosquito repellent for your donkey, consider creating your own blend at home, suggests Sue Weaver, author of "The Donkey Companion." Combine 1 oz. of citronella, eucalyptus or thyme essential oil with 16 oz. of rubbing alcohol and spray it on your donkey's body, being careful to avoid getting it in the eyes.
