Minimize A Mosquito Bite

Mosquitoes suck blood directly out of mammals.

Mosquitoes are tiny flying insects that get their nutrition from blood, whether it be from wild animals, beloved pets or humans. A mosquito's bite often leaves an itchy red bumpy, although the level of discomfort may differ from person to person. A normal mosquito bite should heal on its own within a matter of days. During this time, it's possible to minimize some of the discomfort from the bite.

Instructions

1. Wash the bite and surrounding area with soap and warm water. Pat the skin with a paper towel.

2. Rub a thin layer of calamine lotion on the bite. Alternatively, apply a commercial anti-itch ointment to the bite.

3. Hold an ice pack against the bite to alleviate some of the itching sensation. A plastic bag filled with ice cubes works if an ice pack is not available. You can place a thin towel between the ice pack and the skin so the cold is more bearable.

4. Take oral antihistamines throughout the day. According to Jane Morse of the University of Florida and Pinellas County Extension, antihistamines may help ease mosquito bite symptoms. Follow the recommended dosage on the product label.
