Herbal Fly Repellent

Flies don't like the smell of mint.

You can use herbal fly repellents to repel flies without exposing yourself or your family to chemical pesticides. Making your own herbal sprays or sachets is easy and less expensive than purchasing them from the store. In addition, you can plant certain fly-repelling herbs in pots around your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Sprays

Herbal fly repellents can be made by blending the essential oils of certain plants that are known to repel flies with rubbing alcohol, witch hazel, olive oil or vodka. The ratio of the base to the essential oil is 10 to one. Shake the repellent before use because the oil may separate from the base.

Sachets

Make sachets from cheesecloth and fill them with crushed dried leaves from bay, tansy, yarrow or lavender. You can also crush bay leaves and just rub them on your skin.

Plants

Planting mint or basil in pots around your home will help repel flies. The basil will have a stronger scent if you water it from the bottom. Flies also dislike the scent of marigolds, lemon balm, catnip and chrysanthemums.
