Do It Yourself Mosquito Repellent

Avoid mosquito bites with your own homemade repellent.

Keep those annoying mosquitoes at bay during the warm months of the year by using an effective repellent. Not only is the itch of mosquito bites uncomfortable, but mosquitoes can transmit diseases such as the West Nile Virus, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most typical mosquito repellents available in stores contain strong ingredients that you may wish to avoid. Instead of using these repellents, consider making your own mosquito repellent using a variety of essential oils to discourage pests from biting. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Measure and pour the alcohol into the jar.

2. Add any combination of the listed essential oils to the jar to add a total amount of 2-1/2 tsp. of essential oils to the alcohol. Essential oils have strong and distinctive aromas, so make a combination that you like or use only one essential oil.

3. Cover the jar and shake the ingredients vigorously to blend.

4. Pour the ingredients into a spray bottle, if you desire.

5. Apply the mosquito repellent to exposed skin by either spraying it or rubbing it on lightly. Reapply the repellent when you notice the scent dissipating.
