Do Termites Buzz Like Mosquitoes

Termites, though very quiet, eat and destroy more than wood

Most of us are not real fond of the termite or the mosquito. But while mosquitoes are generally mere annoyances, termites can destroy homes and other belongings. There are many varieties of termites, most of which rarely make a sound. Does this Spark an idea?

About Termites

Termite varieties include the dry wood, damp wood, mound-building and subterranean, which is the most destructive. Termites are social insects that have existed for more than 55 million years and eat dirt, plastic, PVC tubing, fabric and drywall. A colony can consume about 15 pounds of wood in a week. They eat wood from the inside, so it is virtually impossible to know they are there until it is too late, especially considering most do not make a sound.

Sounds

Subterranean termite soldiers may find themselves in compromising situations and bang their heads to attract other soldiers. The banging of heads makes a loud vibrating sound. Winged termites, known to eat fabric and clothing, sometimes make a buzzing sound when circling around.

Considerations

It is true that both the mosquito and the flying termite may orbit around you with a buzzing noise. The fluttering of the termite's wings creates the buzzing sound. Once the termites lose their wings at maturity, though, they try to find a secluded place in your home to start a new colony that silently causes destruction that can go unnoticed for years. All you notice is the wings they dropped.
