Method
ThermaCELL products dispense small amounts of allethrin into the air over a long period of time. The chemical, which comes from a natural insecticide in chrysanthemum flowers, vaporizes and spreads to protect the surrounding area.
Effects
ThermaCELL mosquito repellents can effectively protect small areas such as patios, according to the University of Wisconsin. Other products that dispense allethrin or other pyrethroids also have similar levels of efficacy.

Studies show that when an area repellent that releases allethrin runs, fewer mosquitoes land on humans. Such studies count the number of mosquitoes that attack humans and use light traps to determine the number of biting mosquitoes in the area.
