Do Electronic Pest Repellents Repel Pack Rats

Rat traps usually work more effectively in controlling pack rats.

Pack rats, also known as wood rats, have dark brown bodies and bi-colored tails. Their tails have sparse hairs and are shorter in length compared to their heads and bodies. Does this Spark an idea?

Mechanism

An electronic pest repellent usually works by emitting ultrasonic sounds that humans can't hear. Rats dislike these sounds and avoid areas where they can hear the sounds. Some electronic pest repellents promise to influence the movements of rats, enhancing conventional rat control methods.

Efficacy

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, repellents are not effective on rats. Ultrasonic sounds lose intensity with distance and pack rats quickly become accustomed to these sounds. Because of pack rats' adaptability, repellents usually don't work well against them, the university found.

Solution

According to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, trapping can effectively control pack rat problems. Rodenticides can also eliminate pack rats, but they contain poison which could endanger humans and other animals.
