Electric Mosquito Repellent

Electric mosquito repellents do not live up to their advertisements.

According to the University of Florida, researchers have proven that bug zappers and other electric devices designed to ward off mosquitoes do not work. Some even increase the mosquitoes in your yard since they kill off the insects that feed on mosquitoes. Does this Spark an idea?

Warning

Electronic devices that feature an ultraviolet light that attracts then "zaps" insects harm more beneficial insects than mosquitoes. Yards that have these devices have more mosquitoes than yards without them since the mosquitoes' natural predators are eliminated.

Types

The University of California Statewide Integrated Pest Management program includes "ultrasonic emitters, electric grids [and] electronic repellers" among devices that are ineffective at repelling mosquitoes.

Theories/Speculation

According to the University of California, the only device that may be effective at repelling mosquitoes is a battery-operated machine that dispenses repellent chemicals. However, researchers have not proven that the device's effectiveness is consistent or universal.
