Do Hot Peppers Work For Bug & Spider Repellent

Hot peppers will repel insects and spiders.

A natural bug and spider repellent is waiting in your pantry. The hot peppers you use to add kick to your food can help keep unwanted insects away from your plants and your home. Does this Spark an idea?

Hot Peppers

Hot peppers contain a compound called capsaicin. Capsaicin is what makes your skin burn if you rub peppers between your fingers. It acts as a repellent for bugs and spiders because it causes a burning sensation in them, too. It can even kill them if it penetrates their bodies.

Application

Deter bugs and spiders by creating a hot pepper spray. Grind up 1/2 cup of dry hot peppers, then pour boiling water over them. Let the mixture sit for several hours, then strain the water into a spray bottle. Mist the hot pepper spray over plants that need protection or over outdoor areas that you wish to keep bug and spider free.

Considerations

When using hot pepper spray, avoid letting any get into your eyes as it will cause intense burning. Wearing gloves and protective eyewear will save you from discomfort. Avoid spraying around pets because it will also burn their eyes.
