Insect Barriers & Air Curtains

Whether it is in the garden or a place of business, insects often prove problematic and can be difficult to control. Not only are some destructive to plants, but they are also a nuisance and may spread bacteria in areas where sanitation is important. Using insect barriers, including air curtains, is a method that is frequently found useful in preventing infestation and creating a bug-free environment. Does this Spark an idea?

Insect Barriers

Insect barriers are anything that bars, or prevents, insects from gaining access to buildings or plants. This can be a screen that covers and protects plants, a spray that creates a chemical barrier or a barrier across a door that hinders the insects' ability to enter a place of business. Strip curtains are a type of insect barrier that is installed in doorways and are made of PVC, which allows people to enter and exit but not let in flying insects.

Air Curtain

Air curtains are a form of insect barrier that works by creating a high velocity current, or wall, of air across an opening such as a doorway. The kinetic energy that is caused by the fan prohibits insects from passing through the "curtain" of air and entering the premises. Air curtains can be mounted one of two ways: on the outside of the door or on the inside. For food-related businesses, placing it on the outside helps to create a curtain that is free of the food odors that naturally attract certain flying insects. The stream of air should be set at a 20 degree angle and be wide enough to cover the width of the door to ensure that no insects can make their way around the downdraft.

Who Uses Them

Air curtains can be useful to any business that wants to keep insects from entering. Common locations where they are likely to be found are food-related businesses such as restaurants and food manufacturers, as well as shopping malls, retail stores and loading docks. Other insect barriers, including screens, sprays and door barriers, are often used in farms, gardens, residential homes and businesses, such as manufacturing.

Additional Benefits of Air Curtains

In addition to keeping insects out, air curtains also act as a barrier in keeping rodents from entering the premises. When they attempt to pass through the air curtain, the downdraft of air creates a sensation on the rodent's fur that is offensive to them and they will not try to pass through it. In addition, air curtains also create thermal barriers, offer wind resistance and keep out dust and other types of particles and debris. Another benefit that comes from the use of air curtains is that it allows people to freely pass from one environment to another without obstruction.
