Chemical Free Insect Repellent

Essential plant oils are used as natural insect repellents.

Pesky insects are one of the biggest nuisances to an evening meal on the patio, or a peaceful hike through the woods. For those who appreciate the protection that a little lotion or spray affords over bugs, but want to avoid the chemicals normally found in bug spray, a few more natural options are available. Natural insect repellents are made from plant extracts. Does this Spark an idea?

Natural Insect Repelling Ingredients

Oil of lemon eucalyptus, also known as oil of eucalyptus, is likely the most effective plant-based repellent. It is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as an effective insect repellent, and is found in many commercially produced natural bug sprays and lotions. This oil has a strong aroma, and is not recommended for children under three. Soybean oil is also a common repellent. It is non-irritating and safe for all ages. Citronella oil is made from dried grasses, but has recently been shown by the EPA to contain a low amount of toxicity.

Consumer Products

Most natural insect repellents feature a combination of essential plant oils. These products need to be reapplied with more frequency than those products with chemical repellents (DEET is the common active ingredient). Repel Lemon Eucalyptus Insect Repellent is a highly rated bug lotion that is shown to last eight hours. BiteBlocker Organic Xtreme Insect Spray is a soybean oil-based product that is safe for children and people with sensitive skin. This product will only last 90 minutes to three hours.

Homemade Repellent

Natural insect repellents are made with a mix of essential plant oils and a carrier oil, alcohol or witch hazel. Possible carrier oils include olive oil, sunflower oil or any other cooking oil. Insect-repellent oils include cinnamon oil, eucalyptus oil and citronella oil to combat mosquitoes, and rose geranium oil -- which is effective against ticks. The mixture should include five to 10 percent essential oils. To attain this ratio in a small quantity, mix about 20 drops of your choice of essential oils with two tablespoons of oil, alcohol or witch hazel.

Alternatives to Sprays or Lotions

If you are hosting an outdoor dinner, or having guests over, there are some better options than dousing them each in bug spray. Candles that include bug repellent oils, such as eucalyptus and citronella, can help keep insects away while providing ambiance. Rosemary, catnip and lemon thyme are common garden plants that could make an attractive, insect repelling "dish." Crush leaves from these herbs and float them in cooking oil in a dish on the table.
