Mosquitoes are a common outdoor pest that may be curtailed by electronic means.
Insects can invade your home, eat your food, give you annoying bites or even ruin your outdoor party. There are numerous repellents available, many of them involving poisonous chemicals that could be potentially harmful to you or your family. Luckily, there are some electronic options available from different manufacturers that could help alleviate your insect problem. Does this Spark an idea?
Bug Zappers
Bug zappers are one of the more common sights at outdoor parties and events, particularly at night. These devices use an extremely bright fluorescent light that draws in flying insects such as moths, mosquitoes and gnats. The light is covered by a highly electrified metal grate. When the insects land on the grate, they are immediately zapped and incinerated with their parts falling into a hanging plate below.
Fans
Fans may be used by restaurants with outdoor patios or during outdoor events to keep mosquitoes and other flying insects away. The air currents can push the flying bugs out of their flight paths, disorienting them and forcing them either to land or find a place with weaker air currents.
Sonic Repellents
Sonic/ultrasonic insect repellents claim to be able to repel various insects and even rats and mice by emitting extremely high-pitched frequencies audible only to their ears. Some manufacturers claim that the sound alone is enough to induce pain, which drives away ants, mosquitoes and other insects. Others claim that the sounds mimic the calls of bats, which drive insects like mosquitoes away out of fear of being eaten, while still others mimic the sound of male mosquitoes, which drive away pregnant females looking for a blood meal.
Cons
All of these electronic methods have disadvantages associated with them. Bug zappers are only really effective at night and still do not serve as a repellent; they work more as a distraction for flying insects to keep them away from your party. Fans can keep flying insects at bay but can be annoying to humans as well. Ultrasonic and sonic bug repellents have been discredited by various studies, according to Science Daily, with experiments showing no significant difference in mosquito landings between people equipped with emitters and those not.
