After night crawlers, minnows are probably the most common form of live bait. While some anglers invest in minnow traps and seine nets to capture their own minnows, time constraints typically force fishermen to purchase minnows. You can do this as well, and in such a way that you will save money and time before and after the purchase.
Instructions
1. Purchase a bait bucket. You need something in which to transport your minnows. Many types come with an aerator that keeps the water oxygenated. Regardless of the type you choose, consider whether it will fit inside your vehicle without spilling. A typical bait bucket costs around $20 and has a styrofoam interior that lifts out of the larger bucket.
2. Locate the bait and tackle shop closest to where you usually fish. This saves you time as you will be going in the same direction to reach your angling destination. Ask other anglers that you see using minnows where they got them and about the quality of the service and product they get from that particular business.
3. Establish a rapport with the bait-shop proprietor. This can save you money and time, as you can learn when his shipments of minnows arrive each week. Ask if he has any discounts, such as buying 10 dozen minnows and getting the next dozen free. Get the person's business card and call ahead to make sure he has minnows in stock before driving there. Realize that this individual wants you to do well fishing, since it translates into more business.
4. Have enough buckets to carry the amount of minnows you buy. Minnows will deplete the water of oxygen if they are crowded. If you are going ice fishing, for example, and need six dozen minnows, have at least two separate bait buckets for them.
5. Avoid any drastic temperature changes once you have bought the minnows. Keep the water the same temperature as when you bought it on your way to the lake or river. Minnows will quickly die if they go from one temperature extreme to another, and those that do not expire will be lethargic and make poor bait.
