Garden aphids can be killed with pyrethrum insecticides.
Pyrethrum is an organic insecticide made from chrysanthemums. It is very effective on a wide variety of garden pests including ants, bees, spiders, cockroaches and aphids. Aphids are commonly known as "plant lice," for their infestations on the leaves of common garden plants. Pyrethrum decays quickly and is used for both indoor and outdoor pest control. Pyrethrum is an ingredient found in many pesticide forms, including dusts and powders, sprays and aerosols. Pyrethrum products can be purchased from many home and garden stores, including Home Depot. Instructions
1. Sprinkle a small amount of pyrethrum dust products around the base of leafy foliage. This will prevent aphids and other pests from climbing up the plant to feast on the leaves. Reapply after heavy rains.
2. Spray pyrethrum insecticide liquids on the aphid-infected areas of the plants. Aphids tend to congregate on the underside of a plant leaves, so it is necessary to lift leaves or use a powerful sprayer to contact all aphids with the insecticide. This is essential since aphids will only be killed after coming into contact with the poison.
3. Spray pyrethrum pesticide on non-infected leaves, stems and petals of other garden flowers and plants as well. Aphids that survive the poison spray in step 2 will migrate to areas of the garden that have not yet been contaminated. Protect your plants ahead of time by placing an even coat of pyrethrum spray over the entire garden. Reapply after heavy rains.
4. Use a pyrethrum aerosol to achieve an even coat if the sprayer nozzle on the bottle you have purchased leaves areas of the plants unprotected. An aerosol option will give you a more even coverage with less wasted pesticide.
