Prevent Algae In Garden Fountains

Empty a garden fountain to clean it of algae.

The last thing you want in your garden fountain is an abundance of algae growth. Algae depends on water and nutrients, so when you remove any elements from the mix, you will no longer have an algae issue. Constant cleaning and care is the only way to ensure that algae will disappear and not grow back. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Empty the fountain completely. The whole cleaning process begins by draining the fountain so you have an empty surface to work with.

2. Pull out any debris that may have fallen or blown from trees and plants. You can easily do this with your hands, and gloves really aren't necessary. Remember, organic plant materials are the perfect host that allows algae to begin growing.

3. Scrub the inside of the fountain with a stiff brush. A lot of elbow grease and energy will be needed, so be prepared. Rinse the fountain and then refill it.

4. Pour 2 cups of white vinegar and 1 gallon of water into a large bucket. After removing the tubing and pump parts from the fountain, soak them in this mixture for 15 minutes to kill existing algae and other bacteria.

5. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into the fountain to prevent algae growth until the next cleaning. Evey time you change the water, add vinegar.
