Homemade Suntan Lotion

Sun tan products can be pricey and promise all sort of protection from the sun. However, the best suntan lotions protect your skin from UVA radiation. Plant produced lotions rich in vitamin E will prevent the skin from aging due the effects of the sun. With a few natural ingredients you could make your own suntan lotion. However, you should always apply common sense when it comes to over-exposure to the sun. Does this Spark an idea?

Natural Protection Cream

The following recipe has avocado, sesame and Shea butter, known for their moisturizing properties. These ingredients, when used as a suntan lotion, contain a low sun protection factor, which is highly beneficial to tanning. But their protection from UV/UVB rays is limited and should be used in conjunction with other sunscreen blockers. This suntan lotion should be applied 30 minutes before you tan. Also, limit your tanning session to an hour.

You'll need 3 tablespoons of sesame oil, 1 tablespoon each of jojoba oil, avocado oil, walnut oil or almond oil and shea butter, 2 tablespoons of coco butter and 1 teaspoon of beeswax. Combine these ingredients in a double boiler pan and heat until the mixture melts. Then, add 1 teaspoon of soy-lecithin. Stir the mixture and remove the pan from the heat.

In a small pan combine and warm 2 tablespoons of aloe vera gel, 2 tablespoons of lavender or rose water and one-half teaspoon of borax powder. Then, remove from heat. When the oil mixture and water mixture are about the same temperature, set the small pan in a bowl of ice. Then, pour in the oil mixture while rapidly beating the mixture, which will begin to form a cream. Add 20 drops of carrot-seed essential oil. You can also add 3 to 5 drops of coconut oil, if you desire. Store the cream in a jar and refrigerate.

Peppermint Suntan Lotion

Here's another suntan lotion recipe that's inexpensive to make and free from synthetics. However, this suntan lotion must be stored in refrigerator and only last for one week. You'll need 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, 4 tablespoons of sesame oil, one-third cup of lanolin, 4 drops of peppermint essential oil. Combine the coconut oil, sesame oil, peppermint oil and lanolin in a blender on a low speed. You can add lavender for a relaxing effect or any of your favorite essential oil scent to the lotion. Don't forget to store the mixture in the refrigerator and discard it after one week.
