Does Lavender Oil Keep Away Mosquitoes

Does Lavender Oil Keep Away Mosquitoes?

Overview of Lavender Oil

Lavender is a fragrant herb that is native to the mountainous areas of the Mediterranean. Today it grows in many places including Australia and the United States. The oil that comes from the blue-violet flowers produces the scent used in soaps, bath gels, lotions and shampoos. The oil can be used as a topical antiseptic and as a stress reliever. When diffused through the air, lavender produces a calming effect, and lavender rubbed into the temples can relieve tension headaches. The scent of lavender sachets can help people with insomnia. It works well as a massage oil to help people sleep, and lavender rubbed into muscles relieves muscle aches. The scent is aromatic which would normally attract insects. Lavender oil, however, actually repels mosquitoes.

Use Lavender Oil

To repel mosquitoes, apply lavender oil directly to the body like a perfume. The oil can be part of an herbal repellent as well. Mix lavender with citronella, another bug repellent or try mixing a half-teaspoon of citronella, eucalyptus, and lavender with four ounces of distilled witch hazel. Mix in a spray bottle and reapply at least every two hours. Lavender oil can be added with citronella and clove in candle making to produce a repellent candle. Add 5 parts citronella, clove and lavender in the candle making process. Some commercial bug repellents also contain lavender oil. Planting the herb near a house can repel mosquitoes.

The Limitations of Lavender

Lavender oil does repel mosquitoes but for a short period. The oil actually blocks the ability of the mosquito to smell. Mosquitoes have a very limited olfactory system. Once the oil wears off, the mosquito will attack. Lavender oil must be reapplied every two hours and possibly every hour. DEET is the only product available that lasts for a longer period, blocking the mosquito's ability to smell. Even though DEET is a chemical, there is no evidence that it is harmful. The bottom line is simple. If you are exposed to mosquitoes for a short period, use the lavender oil. If you are in a heavy infested area for a long period, use the DEET. Lavender oil will cost approximately $10 for a one-ounce bottle that must be reapplied often. DEET is a cheaper product to buy and will last longer. Save the lavender for stress or headaches.
