Bugs can easily be exterminated using a DIY bug zapper.
Bug zappers are a great way to distract and kill pesky insects when you're outside in your yard at night. Unfortunately, mosquitoes are not attracted to the fluorescent light the devices emit, but nearly every other bug is. The zappers attract insects then literally electrocute them by zapping them with the current that runs through the device. While bug zappers may be entertaining to watch, they are often ineffective because they kill bothersome and helpful bugs. Depleting certain types of insects will lead to a rise in others, possibly the ones buzzing in your face. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Use an old-style lantern for your base. Make sure it still powers on and off.
2. Remove the bulb and the glass casing for the bulb.
3. Replace the old bulb with a bright fluorescent bulb that fits the outlet. Screw the new bulb in and test it.
4. Line the inside of the lantern with fly paper. Run the paper around the outer portion where the glass was.
5. Place wire mesh around the flypaper. The mesh should stick to the paper and form a surrounding "fence" to the inside of the lantern housing the bulb. Make sure the mesh is touching a metal portion of the lantern to complete the circuit.
6. Hang up the lantern or set it on the ground. Hook a 90 volt battery to the wire mesh using cable clips. Clip both ends to the mesh.
7. Turn on the lantern. Watch the bugs get stuck on the fly paper or electrocuted in the wire mesh.
