Home Remedy To Spray For Bugs

Mosquitoes are pesky bugs and their bites can itch.

Homemade bug spray can be a cheaper and more Earth-friendly alternative to commercial pesticides. Natural ingredients are less toxic and less likely to harm humans or pets. Sprays can be made to keep bugs from biting humans and pets or to keep insects off the porch or out of the house.

Instructions

Personal Bug Spray

1. Prepare the plastic spray bottle by removing the top and rinsing it out with warm water. Mix together 1 cup rubbing alcohol and 2 cups distilled water in the bottle. This is the base into which other ingredients will be mixed.

2. Add 20 drops of each of the following essential oils: citronella, lavender, eucalyptus, rosemary and geranium. "The Complete Illustrated Book of Herbs" recommends all of these herbs as effective for keeping away bugs, and they can be even more potent when used together. Check labels to ensure you are using essential oils. Perfume oils can cause rash and irritation and should not be used, especially on sensitive skin.

3. Shake the mixture before each use. Apply liberally to any exposed body parts. Avoid spraying directly onto clothes, as oils might stain. This mixture can be used on adults, children and even pets. Because it is made up of all natural ingredients it is perfectly safe for anyone, even babies, according to "The Aromatherapy Bible."

Home Indoor/Outdoor Bug Spray

4. Mix together 1 cup rubbing alcohol and 2 cups distilled water in a bottle. This base solution dilutes the oil and makes the spray go a longer way.

5. Add a half cup neem oil. Neem oil comes from the neem tree of India, and is often used in Ayurvedic medicine. It is an herbal oil with a bitter scent which "The Complete Illustrated Book of Herbs" says chases the bugs away.

6. Spray neem oil in areas where bugs need to be kept at bay. Spray only over wood, plastic or metal furniture, as the oil can stain upholstery. Neem oil spray can be used both indoors and outdoors, but it should not be used on human skin as it could cause an allergic reaction.
