Install A Garage Door Coil Spring

Install new springs for your garage door.

Coil springs make it easier to raise and lower a garage door. The springs must have a high amount of tension to offset the weight of the garage door. Older springs may become stretched out and will not hold the necessary tension. Fortunately, you can install new coil springs with a few simple tools and a turning bar. Turning bars may be included in the spring hardware package, but they can also be purchased separately at a home improvement store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Close the garage door and lock it down to prevent it from swinging up as you work with the springs.

2. Place both springs on the center bar of the garage door. The red spring should go on the left side if you are facing the garage door and the black spring should go on the right. Tighten the retention bolts in the center cone to lock the springs into position, using an adjustable wrench.

3. Slide the cable drums over the ends of the bar and tighten the screws with a screwdriver to hold them in place.

4. Put the turning bar in the hole at the end of the spring. Turn the bar in increments of 1/4 revolution at a time. Make sure the tension in the left and right springs are equal so the door will open straight.

5. Open the garage door by hand and move it up and down a few times to check the tension in the springs. Adjust the springs with the turning bar until the door opens and closes freely.
