Garlic cloves have a strong smell and taste that flavors the horse's blood.
Horses may attract ticks, especially if the animals go through wooded areas or areas with a large amount of tall grass. A small amount of garlic, added to the horse's food, serves as a natural repellent for ticks.
Uses
Paw Rescue recommends using one clove of garlic for every 30 pounds the animal weighs. Crush or grate the garlic cloves into smaller pieces, which makes it easier for the horse to digest. Add the garlic into the horse's food every day.
Considerations
Garlic changes the taste of the horse's blood to the ticks, making it unpleasant for them. Once the tick bites the horse, it falls off and seeks an alternate food source. This doesn't stop the ticks from biting, but does stop the ticks from staying with the horse.
Prevention
Lemon or olive oil rubbed onto the horse's fur may also help repel ticks. Combine the oil rubs with shampoos specifically designed to repel and kill ticks.
